Club bikes – Freddie’s Kawasaki widowmaker
Freddie van Eyk has been a Cape Classic member for 4 years (he thinks) Freddie has just completed a build on a 1973 Kawasaki H2 750cc two stroke (Widowmaker) that he has owned for 3 years now.
Why did you buy it?
I bought it because if one crosses your path, you simply have to take it. It is a diabolically evil bike, and I have always wanted one, because of it’s bad reputation.
What work have you done to the bike?
The motor is in good running condition, so I decided to do a cosmetic rebuild. I liked the purple colour, and decided to keep it. I tried to get it as close as possible to a period Café Racer, using bike parts that were available in the seventies. This is a Woodstock and Vietnam era bike, and I call it Purple Haze! I had to import a Borrani rear rim to match the front, and had the spoke wheels completely rebuilt. The correct Denco expansion pipe baffles had to be manufactured from the only one example that I had.
Favourite bike route?
My favourite bike pass is Ou Kaakseweg, but 20 years back, as the current traffic load makes it un-ride-able.
My first bike was a 1973 Honda SSV 50cc.
The ultimate classic bike that I would like to own would be a Mike Hailwood Replica 900cc Ducati.
